Beebe Convenes Global Warming Commission

A state commission to study global warming in Arkansas has met for the first time. The Legislature created the Governor's Commission on Global Warming this year and Gov. Mike Beebe briefly addressed the commission. He pledged to support economic development while holding environmental concerns higher.

The panel will examine ways to reduce pollution that causes global warming and will make recommendations to the 2009 legislative session.

The panel might pursue funds from the nonprofit Center for Climate Strategies to help pay for a study. The state would have to pay at least $50,000 of the estimated $435,000 cost.
